Chapter 14
At one point he and Andrew ended up back to back as the other students filled the dance floor. The music was pumping and everyone was getting a little wild. Other guys were dancing with guys and girls were holding onto girls. He spun around and tugged Andrew close. At first, Andrew resisted until he lowered his lips and whispered in his ear. "Relax. Look around. Everyone is dancing together."
He was able to hold onto Andrew for a full minute before Suzanne tugged him back to her. That was the highlight of his evening. After a little more than an hour, the lights were turned on and one of the teachers moved to the stage. At first he worried that the teacher would say something about the guys dancing with guys. When the teacher looked at him, he put his arm around Suzanne, trying to fit in with the way the other guys and girls were acting.
"It's that time. We will now announce the final four guys and girls on the homecoming court. I have the envelope here. Are you all excited?"
Girls shrieked and guys shouted. Jack glanced at the ground, wondering what the heck all of these people would do if he grabbed Andrew and dragged him up on stage with him. He didn't know for certain, but he had a suspicion that he would make the final four. The nominations were taken two weeks ago and a few cheerleaders had lobbied hard for him. They wanted one of their girls to be queen and they wanted him to be king. They said it would send a positive sports message to the school.
The teacher called out the four girls' names, and he wasn't surprised to see two cheerleaders on the stage. Then a male teacher came up and began reading the guys' names. Brian Williams, Mark Henasee, and Lewis Fuller were all called up. For a second he thought he'd been given a reprieve but then the teacher called his name.
"Jack Miller, come on up."
Suzanne tried to kiss him on the lips but he turned his head so she got his cheek. He glanced at Andrew before heading up. On the way up to the stage, he felt like he'd put on cement boots. People were cheering and he turned to give a quick wave.
Each girl walked up to the microphone and said thanks to whomever they wanted to thank. The guys were a bit briefer and Lewis made a crude joke. Jack walked to the mic, twisting his hands together. His heart thundered as he thought about what he was about to say.
"I really want to thank all of you. You're the best. I appreciate being nominated to the homecoming court. And a special thanks to my date, this is dedicated to you."
Only Andrew knew the truth, everyone else thought he was dedicating this night to Suzanne. The photographer came up on stage and all eight of them stood together to have their photos taken. The girls were told to stand in front of the boys and positioned by the reporter from the local newspaper.
